As the multiplayer team lead at Squido, I was tasked with creating an engaging gameplay loop. With my team, we incorporated a team mode (Rampage mode) and designed smaller, platform-focused maps. Inspired by gladiators, we crafted competitive arenas. We also developed multiplayer-specific power-ups to add fun, chaos, challenge, and competitiveness. Our hard work had a positive impact on the game. Here is a short multiplayer gameplay (STARTS AT 6:35).

Level Design

LEVEL DESIGN

WORLD 1

In The Clouds

  • Primary challenge: navigating and traversing the sky.

  • Features climbing opportunities, intricate platforming sections, and destructible platforms.

  • Requires agility and precision to navigate this dynamic environment.

Spike Traps

  • "Spike Traps" map designed for exhilarating platforming.

  • Adds danger with strategically placed spike traps.

  • Traps create a constant sense of peril, challenging timing and reflexes.

  • Increases excitement and urgency in the platforming experience.

  • Keeps players on their toes and ensures an adrenaline-fueled gameplay session.

Shockwave

  • "Shockwave" map focuses on timing and danger.

  • Players navigate through an area with a lethal shockwave every three seconds.

  • Requires staying in the safe zone or risk crossing the shockwave's path.

  • Adds urgency and strategic decision-making to traditional platforming challenges.

WORLD 2

Crumbling Nightmare

  • "Crumbling Nightmare" map features a floor of destructible platforms.

  • Platforms crumble in just one second, intensifying danger.

  • Requires players to be constantly on the move and adapt their strategies.

  • Emphasizes the importance of choosing different paths from opponents.

  • Challenges players to think quickly, make split-second decisions, and learn from mistakes to survive and outmaneuver adversaries.

Carousel

  • "Carousel" map centers around a colossal, spinning carousel encircling a central tree.

  • Collision with the carousel propels players unpredictably, introducing chaos and peril.

  • Offers a high-risk, high-reward opportunity as it can be used as a trampoline for accessing elevated map areas.

Creepy Jungle

  • "Creepy Jungle" map immerses players in a dense jungle environment.

  • Filled with swinging objects for traversal, requiring precise timing and skill.

  • Players must master the art of swinging, using momentum and coordination.

  • Offers an exhilarating gameplay experience rewarding perfect timing and skillful maneuvering.

WORLD 3

Ice Race

  • "Ice Race" is a fast-paced circular race map.

  • Players compete to locate and destroy spawning chickens scattered randomly.

  • Objective: eliminate chickens quickly.

  • Requires arm-based ice-skating techniques for movement.

  • Demands speed, precise control, and strategic decision-making.

  • Offers an exhilarating gameplay experience combining speed, agility, and unique challenges.

Ice Rink

  • "Ice Rink" map replicates a real-life skating rink experience.

  • Players glide on ice, aiming to locate and destroy spawning chickens.

  • Red walls and platforms propel players forward on collision.

  • Skillful use of these elements adds strategy and speed to gameplay.

  • Rewards players who can masterfully navigate and leverage the environment's dynamic elements.

Jumpy Floor

  • "Jumpy Floor" map features an entire trampoline-like floor.

  • Players are launched into the air with every step.

  • Initially challenging but allows for impressive heights and distances.

  • Encourages exploration of new pathways.

  • Creates thrilling and unpredictable gameplay moments.

WORLD 4

Conveyors

  • "Conveyors" map features conveyor belts and dangerous obstacles.

  • Players must avoid rainbow lava and navigate hazardous areas.

  • Requires precise timing and speed management on the conveyor belts.

  • Offers a thrilling and challenging experience testing agility and decision-making skills.

Pipe Cage

  • "Pipe Cage" map uses pipes for navigation.

  • Red and blue pipes for horizontal movement, yellow for vertical ascent.

  • Involves traversing between floors and strategic maneuvering.

  • Promotes strategic planning and precise movement.

  • Offers an engaging and thrilling gameplay experience.

Raising Lava

  • "Raising Lava" map with ascending rainbow lava at regular intervals.

  • Players navigate horizontally and vertically to avoid being engulfed.

  • Intense and fast-paced gameplay requiring quick thinking and agile movement.

  • Challenges players to adapt strategies and explore pathways.

  • Offers a thrilling and ever-changing environment, keeping players on their toes.

Game Design

GAME DESIGN

The Player's Experience

As the lead game designer, my primary objective was to deliver a captivating and competitive experience for players. To achieve this, I envisioned a concept inspired by gladiators. Each map was meticulously designed to emulate an infernal arena, immersing players in an intense atmosphere.

 

Drawing inspiration from Roman coliseums, I aimed to recreate the grandeur and spectacle of ancient competitions. Visualizing a crowd of spectators cheering on the players and celebrating their successes added an immersive layer to the experience.

Furthermore, I wanted to emphasize the victorious team's achievement by incorporating a celebratory sequence at the end of each round, complete with confetti, flags, and a podium. To intensify the sense of competition, I incorporated grand gates that opened dramatically for each team at the start of the game.

 

Additionally, I conceptualized a lobby where the winning team could revel in their triumph, surrounded by confetti and other festive elements. In essence, my goal was to create an exceptionally competitive experience that truly embodied the essence of gladiatorial challenges.

The Game Mode

Rampage Mode is 3v3 mode where teams are divided into blue and red. The objective is to destroy 20 flying chickens after the Colosseum gates open. The first team to reach 20 points wins the round, and the first team to win 2 out of 3 rounds emerges victorious.

To ensure unpredictability and excitement, I collaborated closely with the programmers. We worked hard to implement a system where the chickens would spawn at random locations and with varying speeds each time. This way, players wouldn't be able to anticipate their patterns, and every match would offer a fresh experience.

Once we confirmed that the gameplay was engaging, I focused on introducing power-ups that players could acquire to enhance their mobility or skills temporarily. While we explored numerous options, we ultimately settled on three power-ups that best complemented the gameplay.

Power-Ups

The Hammer power-up unleashed chaos, allowing players to wield a mighty hammer for 30 seconds. Striking opponents resulted in thrilling disruptions and laughter.

With the X2 Points power-up, players doubled their points for each chicken destroyed within a 20-second timeframe. This strategic advantage aided teams in catching up or securing a path to victory.

The Rage Pepper power-up granted extraordinary jumping abilities for 30 seconds. Players soared through the air, reaching greater heights and distances effortlessly.

These carefully selected power-ups infused the gameplay with depth and excitement, delivering unique and adrenaline-fueled experiences for players.
